Description

Aminosalicylate (5-ASA)

Indications

Mild-to-moderately active UC, acute attacks and remission maintenance in adults and children. Some preparations are not licensed for use in children.

Contraindications

Blood clotting abormalities; pulmonary disease; salicylate hypersensitivity; pregnancy; hepatic impairment. Use with caution in elderly patients. Monitor breast-fed infants for diarrhoea. | Potential side effects: Joint pain; cough; diarrhoea; dizziness; fever; gastrointestinal discomfort; headache; low white blood cell count; nausea; skin reactions; vomiting

Oral tablet/granules, rectal foam, enema, suppository

Quantity

Dose: Salofalk enema: Induction or maintenance, 2 g ×1 (bedtime). Salofalk granules: Induction (child 5–17 years, <40 kg), 30–50 mg/kg ×1 or 10–20 mg/kg ×3; Induction (child 5–17 years, ≥40 kg), 1.5–3 g ×1 (morning) or 0.5–1 g ×3; Induction (adult), 1.5–3 g ×1 (morning) or 0.5–1 g ×3; Maintenance (child 5–17 years, <40 kg), 7.5–15 mg/kg ×2 or 3×DD; Maintenance (child 5–17 years, ≥40 kg), 500 mg ×3; Maintenance (adult), 500 mg ×3. Salofalk rectal foam: Induction (child 12–17 years), 2 g ×1 bedtime or 2×DD; Induction (adult), 2 g ×1 bedtime or 2×DD. Salofalk suppositories: Induction (rectal), 0.5–1 g ×2–3 (0.5 g) or 1 g ×1 (1 g). Salofalk tablets: Induction (child 5–17 years, <40 kg), 10–20 mg/kg ×3; Induction (child 5–17 years, ≥40 kg), 0.5–1 g ×3; Induction (adult), 0.5–1 g ×3; Maintenance (child 5–17 years, <40 kg), 7.5–15 mg/kg ×2 or 3×DD; Maintenance (child 5–17 years, ≥40 kg), 500 mg ×3; Maintenance (adult), 500 mg ×3
